JAKARTA 12 JANUARY 2025 – Robusta coffee is cultivated across various regions in Indonesia, including Lampung, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, East Java, and several areas in Sulawesi. Supported by a tropical climate, consistent rainfall, and fertile soil conditions, Indonesian Robusta coffee possesses competitive quality in the global market.
The main characteristic of Robusta coffee lies in its bold and intense flavor profile. Compared to Arabica, Robusta has lower acidity, a thicker body, and a more pronounced bitterness.
Beyond its distinctive taste, Robusta coffee also has several notable advantages. Its higher caffeine content makes the Robusta plant more resistant to pests and diseases. Additionally, Robusta can be grown at lower altitudes and does not require complex maintenance, resulting in relatively high productivity and a more stable supply.
In the coffee industry, Robusta is commonly used as a primary component in espresso blends, as it produces a thicker crema and maintains a strong flavor even when combined with milk or sweeteners.
Along with improvements in processing quality and post-harvest innovation, Indonesian Robusta coffee has gained increasing attention in international markets. Its advantages in flavor strength, plant resilience, and economic value have strengthened its competitiveness globally.
Indonesian Robusta Coffee Exports
Indonesian Robusta coffee is in high demand in global markets, particularly across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. These regions utilize Robusta coffee as a raw material for beverage industries, instant coffee production, and espresso blends.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, during the 2022–2025 period, national coffee production is dominated by Robusta coffee. Of the total production, approximately 150,000 tons consist of Arabica coffee, while around 600,000 tons are Robusta. In line with this, Indonesia’s net coffee exports are projected to increase from 420,000 tons in 2024 to 427,000 tons in 2025, reflecting a positive export growth outlook.
Furthermore, Robusta coffee tends to be more price-stable compared to other coffee varieties, making it a preferred choice for large-scale industrial players. This factor positions Robusta as a strategic product within the global coffee supply chain.
From a production perspective, Indonesian Robusta coffee is primarily sourced from regions such as Lampung, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, and East Java. Improvements in post harvest processing, production methods, and export quality standards have further enhanced the competitiveness of Indonesian Robusta coffee in international markets. Currently, Indonesian Robusta coffee is exported not only in the form of raw beans but also as high quality green beans and value added processed products.
With strong support from farmers, MSMEs, and exporters, Indonesian Robusta coffee exports hold significant potential for continued growth. Quality innovation, supply consistency, and the implementation of international standards remain key factors in strengthening the position of Indonesian Robusta coffee as one of the leading commodities in the global market.
