JAKARTA 24 December 2025 — The Indonesian government has reached a significant agreement with the United States regarding bilateral trade policy. Through negotiations led by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Indonesia has successfully obtained tariff exemptions for several of its key export commodities entering the U.S. market.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the agreement was achieved following discussions with the United States Trade Representative (USTR). Under the agreement, the U.S. has agreed to grant special tariff treatment to Indonesia’s leading export products, exempting them from additional duties applied to certain other countries.
The commodities receiving tariff exemptions include palm oil, coffee, tea, and cocoa. This policy is considered strategic, as it helps maintain the competitiveness of Indonesian products, particularly those from labor-intensive industries and natural resource based sectors.
In addition to tariff exemptions, both countries have agreed to continue discussions on reducing reciprocal tariffs, which were previously set at 32 percent and have now been lowered to 19 percent. This reduction is expected to support stronger export growth from Indonesia to the United States.
According to Airlangga, the agreement goes beyond tariff issues and also covers broader trade cooperation, including efforts to reduce non-tariff barriers and establish coordination mechanisms to ensure effective implementation.
The Indonesian government is targeting the formal signing of the trade agreement in early 2026, allowing exporters and businesses to benefit from the policy as soon as possible.
With these tariff exemptions in place, Indonesia is optimistic about strengthening its trade position in the global market and increasing the contribution of exports to national economic growth.
