Cabbage Cultivation and Its Benefits

JAKARTA 2 JANUARY 2026 – Cabbage (Brassica oleracea) is a widely cultivated leafy vegetable in Indonesia and many other countries. Although it originates from subtropical regions, cabbage can grow well in tropical climates, especially in highland and mid-altitude areas. 1. Growing Requirements

Cabbage grows best at an altitude of 800–1,500 meters above sea level with temperatures ranging from 15–25°C. It requires fertile, well-drained soil with a pH level of around 5.5–6.5 and full sunlight exposure to support healthy leaf growth and head formation.

2. Cabbage Cultivation Process

a. Land Preparation
The land should be plowed or hoed until loose and formed into raised beds about 100–120 cm wide and 30 cm high. Organic manure or compost is applied to improve soil fertility.

b. Seedling Preparation
Cabbage seeds are first sown in nursery beds or seed trays. After 3–4 weeks, when seedlings have 4–5 true leaves, they are ready for transplanting.

c. Planting
Seedlings are planted with a spacing of approximately 50 × 60 cm to allow optimal head development. Planting is recommended in the late afternoon to reduce plant stress.

d. Crop Maintenance
Maintenance includes regular watering, weed control, additional fertilization, and pest and disease management. Common pests include caterpillars and aphids, while diseases may include root rot. Control methods can be organic or chemical, depending on the farming system.

e. Harvesting
Cabbage can be harvested 80–100 days after planting, depending on the variety. Harvest-ready cabbage has firm, compact heads. Harvesting is done by cutting the base of the stem with a sharp knife.
