Zulhas: Indonesia Will Not Import Rice and Sugar in 2025

Jakarta 19 December 2025 – The Indonesian government has confirmed that it will not import rice and consumer sugar throughout 2025. The statement was delivered by Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas), as part of efforts to strengthen national food security and self sufficiency. The decision was made based on an evaluation of domestic production conditions and stock availability. The government is confident that national production capacity is sufficient to meet public demand without relying on foreign supplies.“In 2025, the government will not import rice and sugar for consumption needs,” Zulhas emphasized during a press conference. This policy is also intended to provide greater support for local farmers.

Focus on National Production and Stock

This policy aligns with the government’s efforts to strengthen the production of strategic commodities. According to reports from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and related ministries, national rice production has shown an upward trend, with stocks expected to be sufficient through the end of 2025.

In the sugar sector, the government continues to monitor and reinforce national reserves by supporting domestic production and improving distribution mechanisms. These measures are expected to maintain price stability in the domestic market and reduce the impact of international price fluctuations.

Several Other Commodities Also Targeted

In addition to rice and sugar, Zulhas stated that commodities such as corn for animal feed and consumer salt are also targeted to no longer be imported in 2025, provided that local production grows in line with projections.

Challenges and Strategic Measures

Despite progress toward food sovereignty, challenges remain, including distribution efficiency, improving farmer productivity, and mitigating risks related to weather and pests. To address these issues, the government plans to strengthen technical assistance, infrastructure development, and access to financing for agricultural stakeholders as part of a long-term strategy.
